Goleman a psychologist and author of bestseller Emotional Intelligence, is discussing his famous" impulse control" test in San Francisco. In his discoveries, he proved that emotional stability is more important than IQ.
In this experiment, preschoolers were in a room at Stanford University. A man gave a marshmallow to each of them and said if you wait for me to come back from an errand, I will give you two marshmallows.
Some of them covered their eyes so they wouldn't see that marshmallow, some of them played a game or sang to keep their thoughts off the single marshmallow but others ate the marshmallow within a second when the man left the room.
Is it diagnostic power, the Goleman said, the same children were tracked down as adolescents and tested again.
The ones who resisted eating the marshmallow were more competent than others. They were less likely to become rattled and disorganized when pressured and during challenges they pursued them instead of giving up.
The one who grabbed the marshmallow were more likely to be stubbo and indecisive or more likely to become immobilized by stress, prone to jealousy.
Goleman explains it "it all because of neuron in the brain that bypassed the necortex_ the area of the brain where the rational decision is made_ and goes straight to the amygdala. The more emotional memories involving temper, fear pile up, frustration, the more the amygdala can hijack the rest of the brain.
But if the emotions stored are those of restraint, self-regulation, empathy, hope, then we become endowed with emotional intelligence.
The bad news, says, Goleman, the University of Vermont said" decline in emotional aptitude among children across the board" children today are more vulnerable than before. What he called a massive "emotional malaise". The good news is emotional intelligence can be taught not only in the home, perhaps in school.
Goleman's intriguing book includes some feminine parts." Girls are raised to be emotionally astute and perspective but sons don't.
The irony, Goleman feels if the book was only about women and children, it wouldn't have gotten much attention. Women and children and school reform are marginalized in this society and maybe it's not consequential, and maybe some doors are opening in our society.
