Savory chocolate....In 1817, one most well-known hauntings in American history was Bell Witch. The strange activities that caused fear in Adams, Tennessee.
The certain details about bell witch were varied from version to version but the prevailing one said that"it was the ghost of a woman named Kate Batts, a mean old neighbor of John Bell. Batts believed that Bell cheated her on her land purchases. On her deathbed, she swore that she would haunt John Bell and his family.
The Bells were tormented for years by the malicious spirit of old Kate. John and his favorite daughter Betsy were the principal targets but she was indifferent towards others. According to one who heard Kate 's voice, 'spoke was at a nerve-racking pitch when displeased.' The witch chased John and Betsy merrily. She threw fuiture to them, yanked their hairs, poked needles into them.
News of Bell witch spread quickly which General Andrew Jackson, the future president wanted to come face to face with this phenomenon. When they were traveling to Adams, the wagon stopped and he heard a sound from bushes" all right general, I will see you tonight. The astonished men couldn't find the source of the voice. Jackson left early the next moing.
The haunting of the Bell ended with her ultimate act of vengeance. In October 1820, John suffered a stroke. According to the recounts of Tennessee university in Nashville, Bell's family noticed that John was sleeping unnaturally so they tried to rouse him but he was in a stupor. His son wanted to get his father's medicine but it was gone but there was a strange vial instead. They summoned a doctor and the witch began to taunting that she gave a dose of its poisonous contents to him. John Bell died on December 20 and Kate began singing loudly near his grave.
There is some explanation for this story. One is that this story was a hoax by Richard Powell. At that time Betsy and Joshua Gardner were in love with each other and Richard was Betsy's teacher who was deeply in love with her so though this story and created all those ghostly facts, he scared Gardner and made him leave the town. In the end, Richard married Betsy Bell.
